The ringing bells, breathtaking painted and carved interior and welcoming courtyard all graciously greet curious visitors and California history buffs. As San Luis Obispo County’s northern gateway, San Miguel’s Mission San Miguel Arcangel, founded in 1797, is a welcoming sight from US Highway 101. As a valuable part of California’s history, the entire area has a feeling of historic value.
One of the most noticeable additions is the vast amount of vineyards popping up in the area. Wineries in this region are gaining speed quickly and tasting rooms now dot the surrounding area, extending north from the now world-famous Paso Robles wine region.
Mexican diners and neighborhood markets are plentiful and a very popular Basque style restaurant brings steadfast fans from throughout San Luis Obispo County. Plans to further develop downtown San Miguel as a tourist destination is currently in progress with equestrian, biking and hiking trails all perfectly suited as a part of this region’s vast expansion.
